Ascension’s WoW server becomes an original game

Project Ascension, the classless World of Warcraft private server, will close its emulated WoW realms on September 5, 2026. The shutdown followed a mutual agreement between the Ascension team and Blizzard and ended almost ten years of unofficial WoW servers running under the Ascension name. Instead of disappearing, Ascension is turning into its own original MMO. The team announced the plan on Discord alongside a teaser video, and this article covers everything confirmed so far.

What happened to Project Ascension’s WoW servers

Project Ascension ran WoW realms since 2016, known for a classless system that let players combine spells and talents from any class rather than pick a fixed one. The September 5 shutdown will cover all of Ascension’s remaining realms and all development is shifting away from anything tied to WoW or Blizzard.

Ascension is becoming an original MMO

In a Discord message, project lead Dutch confirmed that Ascension is becoming its own original MMO. This is the clearest statement yet on what the team is building after the WoW shutdown. Dutch said a lot of work on the new game is already done, and that players won’t have to wait through years of teasers and concept art before something playable exists.

What carries over from Project Ascension

The Discord announcement lays out four specifics for existing players:

  • Ascension accounts carry over to the new game. The new site will also show players an account number tied to their account.
  • The game and launcher will both live at ascension.gg.
  • Players can keep using their existing Ascension launcher. It updates automatically once a playable alpha is available.
  • Donation points spent on the WoW servers convert into a new currency, usable on founder cosmetic items in the original game. This is a credit toward the new project, not a cash refund.

The Ascension MMO alpha

The team’s first goal is a small, rough playable alpha covering a single game mode. Players will be able to opt in, test it, and send feedback, with development building out from there based on that input. No release date has been set. Dutch said only that a separate announcement will cover timing when it’s ready.

The Ascension teaser video

Alongside the Discord post, Ascension released a teaser video, the first public material tied to the new MMO. It was shared under the same terms as the written announcement: accounts carry over, the launcher stays the same, and donation points convert to founder currency.

What’s still unknown

Ascension hasn’t said how much of the “already done” work on the new MMO predates the Blizzard agreement, or whether the team was developing original technology before the WoW shutdown was finalized. What’s confirmed is narrower: Ascension’s accounts, community, launcher, and development team are continuing past the server closure, moving from an unofficial WoW server into an original game under the same name.

Ascension MMO: quick answers

Do I keep my Project Ascension account? Yes. Existing Ascension accounts carry over to the new game, and the new site will show an account number tied to each one.

What happens to donation points I already spent? They convert into a new currency for exclusive founder cosmetic items in the original MMO. It is not a cash refund.
