True Spy

Know who's hunting you - before they reach you.

True Spy is enemy intelligence for World of Warcraft. It watches the combat log, nameplates, your target and your mouseover, scores every hostile player it sees, and turns that into something you can act on: a clean on-screen scanner for the heat of the moment, and a full Intel Center command screen for everything else.

Built to be fast and crisp - a modern take on classic enemy detection, not a cluttered clone. One lean window on screen; the deep tooling one click away.

The scanner (your on-screen window)

  • Slim, compact list. Each contact is a threat-colored square and a class-colored name on the left, level and class right-aligned. That's it - readable at a glance in the middle of a fight.
  • Header your way - a clean two-row header by default (a title/count bar, then a control bar with the list dropdown - Nearby, History, KOS, Reports, Deaths - the Intel Center icon and a clear). Prefer less? Switch to a slim one-row, auto, Minimal (no title - just the controls), or Legacy Spy layout in Options; auto never scrunches at any width.
  • Threat-tinted rows - a subtle threat/class-colored bar behind each name so the list reads instantly.
  • Legacy Spy look - a mode on the Header button (or /tspy spy) that turns the Nearby list into solid class-colored name bars running edge to edge - white name on the left, level and class on the right, with a slim header to match - the classic enemy-scanner style. Threat stays one hover away. Off by default; both looks ship, your choice.
  • Make it match YOUR UI - an Accent color button (Red classic, Dark Blue, Slate, Green) recolors the window border and title; an opt-in grow upward checkbox stacks names from the bottom edge like the classic Spy; and Text size sits in Options (left-click bigger, right-click smaller). Threat and KOS colors stay meaningful no matter the accent.
  • The original Spy's skeleton, opt-in - Auto-fit height shrink-wraps the window to the names present (header only when empty - no dark box, ever), Header at the bottom docks the bar right on top of your chat frame with names stacking upward, and Names shown caps the list at 5-20 names like the classic. Add Text outline (None/Outline/Thick) and the Legacy Spy bars and it IS the original look, with all the intel underneath. A Slim intel card option drops the click-help footer from the hover card too.
  • Sort the Nearby list by threat, level, class or most-recent (right-click the dropdown). Optional column headers can be turned on in Options.
  • Settings you can actually find - Options are tabbed (Detection, Alerts, Window, Intel, Sounds, Tools), every toggle explains itself right on its row, and a search box filters all forty-plus settings across every tab as you type. The Tools page is grouped into Data, Appearance and Help.
  • Windows that behave - every window closes on Escape, drags from anywhere, remembers where you put it, follows your accent color, and sizes itself to its content instead of clipping it.
  • Pin contacts to the top of Nearby and History (/tspy pin <name>).
  • Minimap count badge - the spyglass shows the live nearby count, colored by the top threat present. Both the badge and the whole minimap button can be turned off for a clean minimap (/tspy keeps everything reachable).
  • Resize freely - drag the corner grip as small or large as you want - plus window opacity and lock, and a Reset window button (/tspy resetwindow) that snaps everything back to default if a saved size ever goes wrong. Row hover tooltips can be turned off in Options.
  • Ignore flight path riders (opt-in) - taxi passengers stop pinging the scanner; players on their own flying mounts still register (/tspy taxi). And the threat square before names can be turned off for clean class-colored names.
  • Auto-open threshold - let the window pop on its own only for the tiers you care about: Any / Caution+ / Serious+ / Deadly-only. Pair it with opt-in Auto-hide when quiet (30s to 5 min) and the scanner appears when danger shows up and melts away when it passes.
  • Hide while not PvP flagged (opt-in) - the window keys itself to YOUR own PvP flag: no auto-opens unflagged, hides when the flag drops, returns when you flag up (/tspy pvponly). Detection keeps running underneath. Made for PvE realms.

Detection and threat scoring

  • Detects hostiles from the combat log, nameplates, target and mouseover.
  • Threat score, 1-100, weighing level gap, class danger, KOS status and your personal win/loss history against that player.
  • Stealth siren - a distinct alarm the moment a stealth ability goes off near you.
  • Enemy Cooldown Tracker - opt-in: hostile players burning big cooldowns (PvP trinket, wings, Recklessness, Vanish, bubbles…) get remembered - their hover card and dossier show "Trinket down 1:42". KOS trinket burns get a chat call-out (/tspy enemycds). Classic clients (Era + TBC) for now.
  • Quiet while you ride - opt-in: while YOU are on a flight path, every alert stays silent and nothing auto-opens - the world scrolling under a taxi is scenery, not threats. Tracking continues; the noise returns on landing.
  • True Bounty - opt-in: a guild bounty board. /tspy bounty <name> posts a hunt every guildie running True Spy sees, sightings count while it runs, and the kill claims it for the whole guild with a payoff call. /tspy bounties opens the board. No gold moves - the payoff is glory.
  • Enemy Cooldown Icon Bar - opt-in: the tracker's live burns as a movable icon row with cooldown sweeps and names, soonest back up first, party-shared reports included. The at-a-glance surface.
  • Guild Intel Leaderboard - opt-in: lifetime kills, KOS takedowns and deaths avenged traded with guildies running True Spy, built into a friendly board (/tspy board). Validated, per-realm, self-pruning.
  • Party Cooldown Intel - opt-in: the tracker's big-cooldown sightings shared party/raid-wide between True Spy users - their trinket is down for EVERYONE, on everyone's hover cards. Validated, throttled, and both players must opt in (/tspy partycds). Needs the Enemy Cooldown Tracker.
  • Enemy Healer Highlight - opt-in: players seen healing get a green cross by their name in the lists, a note on their hover card and dossier, and one call-out when first spotted (/tspy healers). Kill the healer first.
  • Enemy Interrupt Tracker - opt-in: a hostile player burning their interrupt (Kick, Pummel, Counterspell, Earth Shock…) gets "Interrupt down 0:08" on their hover card and dossier - the moment their kick is spent, your heal or nuke casts free (/tspy interrupts). Classic clients for now.
  • Nemesis Ledger - a rival board ranking everyone you have traded blows with by streak, record and unpaid deaths, with an orange mark on anyone you owe one (/tspy nemesis). Dossiers carry the same rivalry line.
  • Kill Highlights - KOS takedowns, revenge kills, multikills and streak milestones save themselves to a reel; replay them newest first with /tspy highlights, click a name for the dossier.
  • DR Tracker - opt-in: crowd control landing on a hostile player shows each DR chain's state on their hover card and dossier - "Stun DR: half next", quarter next, or immune, with the reset clock (/tspy dr). Classic clients for now.
  • Auto-Inspect - opt-in: targeting a hostile player out of combat quietly reads their spec and rough gear level; the dossier and hover card then show "Frost | ~264 gear" - "can I take this guy?" answered before the fight (/tspy inspect). Retail and Mists clients.
  • Revenge Contracts - when someone kills you, put them under contract from the dossier. The addon counts every sighting, swings the direction arrow onto them, and closes the contract with a celebration telling you how long the hunt ran and how many times you spotted them first (/tspy contracts). Never opens one on its own.
  • The map as a scoreboard - death skulls hover to name who killed you and how many were on you; opt-in victory stars mark every fight you won, with your all-time record against them. Markers cluster at a radius you choose, and hovering a cluster breaks it into deaths, victories and contacts. Neutral towns like Booty Bay can be kept clean of markers entirely, or skipped by detection altogether.
  • Names-only window (opt-in) - background, border and controls go fully transparent, leaving just the names floating on screen, with an optional reveal-on-mouseover. The invisible frame stops taking clicks, so it never swallows one meant for the world behind it.
  • Stealth siren points the way - opt-in: the screen edge nearest where a stealther vanished flashes and fades, read against your current facing (/tspy stealthdir).
  • BG Objective Calls - opt-in: flags taken, dropped and captured, bases assaulted and claimed, as one compact call on screen inside battlegrounds, throttled to one per event (/tspy bgcalls).
  • Win Probability Read - the dossier and hover card carry a pre-engage estimate built from what the addon already knows about you two: your record against them, the level gap, the current streak, and the gear difference when Auto-Inspect has it. "Win read: 72% (you: 7-3)", colored by favor. Past ten fights the read IS your win rate against them.
  • Enemies seen only through the combat log (no level yet) show a clear ?? until you see them on a nameplate or target them.

Alerts you control

  • Spoken audio alerts with custom phrases and player name / class variables.
  • Threat-tiered sounds - a distinct alert for red-tier (70+) contacts, plus a first-contact-of-session chime. Every sound is chosen from a scrollable dropdown, not cycled one at a time.
  • Per-name re-alert cooldown so you're not spammed by the same player (/tspy realert <seconds>).
  • Quiet modes for battlegrounds and cities when you want the intel without the noise.
  • Safe Zones (opt-in) - a quiet list for places that are "full of hostiles" buying repairs: Ratchet, Booty Bay, Gadgetzan and friends ship as defaults, and standing anywhere and typing /tspy safezone adds or removes it on any language client. No sounds, voice, siren or auto-open inside; detection keeps filling the lists.
  • Alert Snooze - a button right on the scanner's control bar (plus /tspy snooze and one under Options > Alerts) mutes every alert for 15 minutes when you land in the middle of something loud, then they come back on their own. /tspy snooze 30 picks the length.
  • Tactical Danger Radar - an ambient red screen-edge glow and a compact, movable heat meter that rise as high-threat enemies gather around you (LOW -> CAUTION -> SERIOUS -> DEADLY), so you feel a zone getting hot before you're jumped. Built on the threat scores it already tracks. Off by default; turn it on in Options or /tspy radar.
  • Hunter Arrow - opt-in: the moment an enemy player attacks you or has you targeted, the direction arrow locks onto them with name and distance and follows the fight (TomTom waypoint too, if installed). If they restealth or vanish, it holds their last known spot - perfect for hunting the ganker back. Off by default; Options or /tspy hunterarrow.
  • Quiet by default - out of the box nothing pops or pings; the list just fills. Turn on alert sounds, spoken alerts, the stealth siren, the radar, or the window auto-open one at a time, exactly how you like it.

The Intel Center (full command screen)

One click from the scanner opens the command screen where everything is handled:

  • Sortable, filterable, virtualized datatables: Nearby, History, KOS, Deaths, Reports - with saved filter presets and CSV / TSV export of any view.
  • Bulk KOS - Ctrl+Shift-click to multi-select and flag rows at once.
  • Backup and restore your entire intel database as a paste string (/tspy backup, /tspy restore), plus a history-retention slider.
  • Analytics: a current-zone danger forecast, a busiest-hours activity sparkline, a contacts-per-day trend, and a death map whose skulls scale and fade by recency.
  • Stats: nemesis and victim boards, wins/losses by class, deadliest zones and hours, and a per-login session log.
  • Zone Map view with real map art, and a settings-profile manager you can save, load, share and auto-load per character.

On death and after the fight

  • Killer dossier on death - when an enemy player kills you, their dossier opens automatically: your record against them, their opener, counter advice, and the KOS/note buttons right there.
  • Session debrief - one compact card per login (minutes played, contacts, kills/deaths, new KOS, your most-seen enemy, hottest zone). /tspy debrief any time; it pops itself when you leave a battleground with something to report.
  • After-action reports with damage breakdowns and the opener each enemy used.
  • BG incoming announcer - several fresh contacts in one spot inside 15 seconds becomes ONE call-out to the battleground channel (off by default, throttled so it never spams).
  • BG Kill Feed - opt-in: a slim fading feed of your team's killing blows inside battlegrounds, killer and victim in class colors, KOS names in red, your own kills starred. Drag it anywhere; only exists in BGs (/tspy killfeed).

Guild and sharing

  • Guild-wide contact and KOS sync with a directional targeting arrow and TomTom support. One toggle controls both directions: sharing off means you send nothing and guildmates' broadcasts are ignored.
  • Announce KOS sightings to guild chat (opt-in; Options or /tspy announceguild).
  • KOS list export / import to trade lists with friends.
  • Coming from the old Spy addon? One command claims your history: /tspy importspy reads the classic Spy addon's saved data - the KOS list (from ALL your characters on the realm) and your win/loss records, with classes and levels - straight into True Spy. Spy just needs to be installed and enabled; it does not need to work.

How to Report Bugs

Something misbehaving? The addon writes your bug report for you:

  1. Turn on Debug mode - Options, or /tspy debugmode. From that moment it records every detection, alert, arrow action, and error message. Lua errors are ALWAYS kept (the last 50), even before you turn Debug mode on.
  2. Make the problem happen.
  3. Type /tspy bug (or hit Report a Bug in Options). A window opens with a complete report already written: your game version and flavor, class, level, current settings, the recorded Lua errors, and the event log.
  4. Press Ctrl+C and paste it in a comment or private message right here on this page.

That one paste usually tells us everything we need to fix your issue on the first try.

Housekeeping

  • Database janitor - old intel rots away on a retention you control (/tspy keep <days>, default 45). KOS entries, players with notes, and anyone you have a win/loss record with never rot.
  • Fully localized interface on deDE, frFR, esES/esMX, ptBR and ruRU clients (530+ strings), with clean English fallback. Every language is its own file under Locales/ - translators welcome: copy Locales/enUS.lua, translate the values, post it in a comment, and we ship it for everyone.
  • WeakAuras events: TSPY_CONTACT, TSPY_KOS, TSPY_DEATH - with a WeakAuras Kit of one-click starter auras (/tspy weakauras).
  • Every window remembers its position and size.

Slash commands

/tspy opens Options. Also: debrief, pin <name>, realert <seconds>, announceguild, firstchime, radar, hunterarrow, killfeed, enemycds, interrupts, dr, nemesis, highlights, healers, pvponly, taxi, snooze [mins], safezone [name], safezones, inspect, importspy, mapwins, neutralmap, cluster, namesonly, contracts, contract <name>, stealthdir, bgcalls, bug, combatlog, debugmode, whatsnew, weakauras, resetwindow, header <two|one|auto>, spy, keep <days>, backup, restore, mapcal, arrowcal.

On World of Warcraft: Forever

True Spy runs on the Forever client with a manifest of its own. The scanner, threat scores, spoken alerts, KOS and guild sync, the map, dossiers, the Intel Center, bounties and the leaderboard all work there. The one thing Forever takes away is the combat log: that client refuses it to addons outright, so True Spy detects on nameplates, target and mouseover, reads kills from your target dying and deaths from your own, and the records, streaks and map still fill. The intel only the combat log can supply - the stealth siren, after-action breakdowns, the Enemy Cooldown, Interrupt and DR trackers, healer detection - stays off on Forever, and the addon says so once at login. /tspy combatlog asks again; /tspy status says open or closed. The beta's loader also reads back no settings file, so on Forever every logout keeps a copy in the character's own file for the day that is fixed; until then its settings reset there each login and /tspy status says so.

Works on

  • World of Warcraft: Forever (1.60.1 beta; launch November 4, 2026)
  • Retail (12.1.0)
  • Mists of Pandaria Classic (5.5.4)
  • Classic Era (1.15.9)
  • Burning Crusade Classic (2.5.6)

One download; each client loads the build made for it.
