RP Toolkit
AI-Assisted Development Disclosure
RP Toolkit is developed with the assistance of AI.
AI tools have been used throughout development to assist with areas such as code drafting and review, documentation, UI iteration, artwork and visual assets, and some written reference/lore content. The addon is directed, tested in-game, reviewed, and iterated on by me, (the project author) rather than being automatically generated and published without oversight.
RP Toolkit does not connect to or run any AI service. AI is part of the development process, not an in-game requirement or dependency.
I want to be open about that from the beginning so users can make their own informed decision about whether they are comfortable using the addon. Personally I wish AI was either non-existent, or heavily regulated to protect human art, jobs, and safety. I feel the need, and believe disclosure about its use should be required.
Every piece of artwork has been heavily modified to fit to the design by myself, or in total drawn by myself in affinity in the case of most symbols/emblems. I fully understand if you take issue with it.
RP Toolkit is a book-themed roleplay continuity and organization addon for World of Warcraft.
RP Toolkit is currently designed and tested for both Retail World of Warcraft and WoW Forever. Client-specific differences such as maps, APIs, and available character statistics are handled separately where necessary.
Important lore note: while the addon itself works on both clients, the built-in Atlas & Lore content is currently anchored primarily to Year 25, the opening year of World of Warcraft and the starting era for WoW Forever. Retail players can still use the Atlas, Saved Places, maps, Dossiers, Journal, and other tools normally, but the included lore should not currently be treated as a reference for the modern Retail timeline.
It was created to solve a simple problem: after weeks or months of roleplay, it can become difficult to remember every character you met, every location that mattered, what happened in previous sessions, and which story threads you intended to return to.
RP Toolkit provides a personal reference book for that information.
It is designed to complement addons such as Total RP 3, not replace them. TRP3 remains the place to create and manage your roleplay profile; RP Toolkit focuses on remembering your own experiences, characters, locations, notes, and ongoing stories.
Most RP Toolkit information is stored locally in World of Warcraft's SavedVariables and remains under your control.
Features
Character Dashboard
The Home page provides a quick overview of your current character, including:
- interactive character model
- character statistics
- RP Toolkit activity summary
- optional read-only Total RP 3 profile summary
- TRP3 Characteristics, Additional Information, and At First Glance information when available
The TRP3 view is intended as a quick reference only. Full profile creation and editing remains in Total RP 3.
Character statistics are adapted to the client where necessary. Retail and WoW Forever do not expose exactly the same statistics, so RP Toolkit displays appropriate information for each client.
Dossiers
Keep records about characters, NPCs, creatures, places, and other subjects encountered during roleplay.
Dossiers support:
- folders and organization
- local notes
- encounter history
- character ownership
- search
- drag-and-drop organization
- optional TRP3 profile information
- reusable records that can grow as a character or story develops
Journal
Maintain an in-character or out-of-character journal for your adventures.
Journal entries can be organized into folders and used for:
- session notes
- character journals
- campaign history
- story developments
- observations
- personal continuity notes
Atlas & Lore
RP Toolkit includes an in-addon lore reference designed with roleplayers in mind.
The Atlas provides:
- region lore
- local-area lore
- roleplay context
- important people and factions
- potential dangers
- story hooks
- era-aware lore organization
The goal is not to replace a full Warcraft wiki, but to provide the information most useful when deciding how a character might understand or interact with a location without needing multiple monitors or alt-tabbing.
The lore is currently set primarily to Year 25, the opening year of WoW and the starting era for WoW Forever. This is true even when using RP Toolkit on Retail. The addon functionality, maps, Saved Places, and other organizational tools work on Retail, but the included lore is not currently intended to describe the modern Retail timeline.
In the future I may look into expanding this, both for ongoing stories in WoW Forever lore and possibly for Retail.
Saved Places
Save locations that matter to your character or stories.
Saved Places can include:
- named map locations
- notes
- custom symbols
- point locations
- radius-based Local Areas
- polygon-shaped Local Areas
- World Map and minimap overlays
- visit detection and history
Local Areas can represent locations such as estates, neighborhoods, camps, ruins, taverns, groves, territories, or any other space that is more meaningful than a single map pin.
My Characters
RP Toolkit keeps track of which character owns character-specific records and settings.
This makes it possible to organize information across multiple characters while still preserving which character originally created or experienced it.
Map & Minimap Tools
Saved Places and Local Areas can be displayed directly on the World Map and minimap.
Polygon areas support:
- drawing and editing vertices
- World Map editing
- minimap editing
- configurable line appearance
- concave shapes
- multiple display modes
The minimap display is designed to remain lightweight and updates adaptively while moving rather than performing expensive work every frame.
Map behavior is handled separately where needed between Retail and WoW Forever rather than assuming that map IDs, geometry, or client APIs are identical.
Optional Total RP 3 Integration
RP Toolkit can integrate with Total RP 3 when it is installed, while remaining fully usable without it.
Current integration includes read-only access to supported public profile information and tools for using selected TRP3 information within RP Toolkit. There is also an added button in TRP3s window to add your current target automatically to a Dossier entry.
RP Toolkit uses TRP3's supported interfaces where possible and does not directly read TRP3 SavedVariables.
TRP3 is not a required dependency, but does enhance what can be seen and done just like TRP3 Extended.
On Retail, RP Toolkit's TRP3 integration can be used normally with a compatible TRP3 installation.
On WoW Forever, RP Toolkit itself remains usable without TRP3. TRP3 integration will depend on Total RP 3 releasing a compatible WoW Forever version, so those portions of RP Toolkit may not be available there yet.
TRP3 Extended Support
RP Toolkit also includes optional tools for working with supported descriptive information from Total RP 3 Extended.
Imported or published information is treated as data rather than executable content, and sharing actions remain explicit.
You can directly create TRP3 Extended items to give to other users, which then the user can import those items created from RP Toolkit back into their own. (basic you may want to modify their appearance before handing off but this is one area I am interested looking into more)
As with normal TRP3 integration, TRP3 Extended functionality on WoW Forever depends on TRP3 Extended itself providing a compatible version for that client. RP Toolkit does not require TRP3 Extended in order to function.
Custom Symbols & Appearance
RP Toolkit uses a leather-and-parchment book interface designed to feel appropriate inside World of Warcraft rather than like a generic utility window.
It also supports:
- Race emblems (If i can get them done, Classs/Spec along with guild symbol support)
- expandable emblem selection
- custom user-provided symbols (named like Custom01.tga, Custom02.tga) - Recommend 300px x 300px artwork
- character-specific appearance preferences
- multiple window sizes (sometimes gets cramped)
- minimap launcher
- configurable map and minimap presentation
Local-First Design
A major design goal of RP Toolkit is giving the player control over their own roleplay records.
Dossiers, Journal entries, Saved Places, Local Notes, visit history, and most other RP Toolkit records are stored locally using World of Warcraft SavedVariables.
RP Toolkit does not automatically broadcast your notes or records to other players.
Information is only shared when you deliberately use a feature intended to share it.
Why RP Toolkit Exists
RP Toolkit began as a way to make long-term roleplay easier to remember and just as a fun excercise for me to see if (with AI assistance of course) I could.
World of Warcraft roleplay can continue for months or years. Characters meet dozens of people, travel through countless locations, form relationships, discover secrets, revisit old stories, and build personal histories that the game itself does not track.
Existing RP addons do an excellent job of answering:
“Who is this character?”
RP Toolkit is intended to help answer a different set of questions:
“Have I met this character before?”
“What happened the last time we spoke?”
“Why does this location matter to my character?”
“What was I doing in this story three months ago?”
“What did my character actually know about this place?”
The long-term goal is to create a personal roleplay reference book that connects characters, places, journals, lore, encounters, and continuing story threads without trying to dictate how anyone should roleplay.
Development Status
RP Toolkit is under active development.
Retail World of Warcraft and WoW Forever are currently both tested clients.
The core addon is designed to work on both clients, with client-specific handling where maps, APIs, character statistics, or other game systems differ.
The built-in Atlas & Lore content is currently primarily written around Year 25, the opening era of World of Warcraft and WoW Forever. Retail users should keep in mind that this means the included lore does not currently represent the modern Retail timeline, even though the rest of RP Toolkit can still be used normally there.
WoW Forever is tested separately rather than assuming its map geometry, APIs, and other client-specific information are identical to Retail (Lor' danel for example not existing etc).
Total RP 3 and Total RP 3 Extended integration on WoW Forever will depend on compatible versions of those addons being available for that client. RP Toolkit itself does not require either addon.
Some multiplayer and guild-oriented features are also being developed conservatively until they can be tested with multiple active clients, but for now the Guild Page is not useful yet and i'm just trying to figure out what all i could do in that space.
Feedback and bug reports are welcome, especially for unusual UI layouts, addon compatibility, and roleplay workflows. At the end of the day this is a personal addon for myself that if you, your friend group, your guild could get use out of, then please do.
