Denizens turns WoW: Forever's /who results into a sortable table, inside Blizzard's own window. /dz opens a second window with a query builder, a results filter, and a deep scan that gets past the server's 50-result cap. Everything it sees is saved to a census.

The table replaces the contents of Blizzard's /who window, so the frame, border and position stay the ones you already know. /dz takeover off turns that off. The /dz window works either way.

Why

Forever's stock /who pane is a flat list of cards. It can't be sorted or narrowed once it's on screen, and the full query syntax (name, guild, zone, race, class, level range) only works if you already know how to type it by hand. A /who reply also carries at most 50 rows: the stock pane tells you when there were more, it just can't show them to you.

What you get

  • Sortable columns. Name, level, class, race, zone, guild, in Blizzard's own /who window. Click a header to sort, click again to reverse. Names are class-colored.
  • Click to whisper. Click a row and it fills the chat box with a whisper to that player. Nothing is sent for you.
  • A query builder, a filter, and Deep scan. All three live in the /dz window, which opens whether the in-pane table is on or off. The builder has fields for name, guild and zone, dropdowns for class and race, a level range, and a live preview of the exact query string before it's sent. The filter narrows what's already on screen without spending another query.
  • A census. Every reply, from a scan or an ordinary /who you typed yourself, is saved between sessions. /dz census prints how many were seen in the last 7 days, how many ever, level brackets, and the biggest guilds.

Deep scan

A reply of exactly 50 results has been cut off. /dz deep, or the Deep scan button in the /dz window, splits the level range in half and asks again for each half, and keeps splitting until every piece comes back under 50. It merges the results and drops duplicates. If a single level still has more than 50 people, the scan log (/dz debug) names it.

Deep scans are slow. The server throttles /who, so Denizens sends one query every 2.5 seconds, slower if replies stop coming. A wide level range means a lot of queries.

Commands

/dz and /denizens are the same command.

  • /dz: toggle the window
  • /dz <query>: open the window and run that search, e.g. /dz z-"Elwynn Forest" 4-10
  • /dz deep [query]: deep scan; defaults to whatever query is already on screen
  • /dz cancel or /dz stop: stop a running scan and keep what it found so far
  • /dz census: print what the census knows
  • /dz wipe: clear the census
  • /dz debug: show the recent internal log
  • /dz takeover off: stop replacing Blizzard's /who pane; use the /dz window only
  • /dz takeover on: put the table back in Blizzard's pane
  • /dz help: list these commands in chat

/reload to apply either takeover setting.

Known limits

  • The server caps every /who reply at 50. An ordinary search that comes back at 50 stays at 50 until you run Deep scan (above).
  • A scan given no level range defaults to 1-60.
  • The "Zone" column shows the subzone the client reports (for example "Echo Ridge Mine"), not the parent zone. There's no separate zone field to draw from.
  • Six columns are fit into whatever width the pane ends up at. A cell that's cut off shows the rest in a tooltip.
  • The census only knows who it has seen. Offline characters never show up, and a deleted, renamed or transferred character looks the same as one who has not logged in, so "known ever" is an upper bound. It keeps the 25,000 most recently seen characters and drops the oldest past that.
  • The in-pane table shows a plain count and no capped hint; the stock pane's own "there were more than 50" line and the deep-scan hint both only exist in the /dz window.
  • Writing into Blizzard's /who pane means writing to a frame under the Group Finder, which can taint it. That hasn't caused a problem in testing. /dz takeover off stops the in-pane write, but Denizens still closes Blizzard's /who window when one of its own queries comes back, and that currently closes the Group Finder too if you have it open.

Compatibility

Built and tested on the WoW: Forever public beta only. Not tested on any other client, or next to other addons that change the /who window or the Group Finder.

Reporting a problem

GitHub issues. Include the output of /dz debug.
